Guatemala relaunches US$120 million rural electrification tender

Guatemala’s National Electrification Institute (INDE) has relaunched the bidding process for the Rural Electrification Infrastructure Program (PIER), financed through a US$120 million loan granted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Korea Co-Financing Facility for Infrastructure Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The new process includes the construction of medium- and low-voltage power distribution networks and transmission lines aimed at benefiting rural communities in Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Huehuetenango, and Quiché. The initiative seeks to expand electricity coverage to more than 130 communities and approximately 10,000 to 12,000 households.

Following the unsuccessful conclusion of the initial tender process, INDE introduced technical and administrative adjustments to the bidding terms in order to encourage broader participation and facilitate project execution. Key modifications include dividing the project into three independent lots and easing certain guarantee requirements.

The program forms part of a national strategy aimed at strengthening energy infrastructure and expanding access to essential services in rural areas through investments that promote the country’s economic and social development.
